I've been to Peninsular Malaysia several times. There is much I like about it. It reminds me of how Singapore used to be, before it became ultra-modern and hyper-clean. But I'm not sure it's an apt comparison: the Malays are a more easy-going people, the food is less diverse, the country is bigger and more expansive. I grew up hearing tales of the country from my father, who did his national service here during the Malayan Uprising.
These images mostly come from my overland trip from Indonesia to China in 2002, but there are some other images from earlier and later travels. Being a lover of cities, I mostly confined myself to the west coast. KL is a favourite place of mine, though Melaka and Penang also have much charm.

A washed out journalist, posted to India to cover a bloody election campaign, uncovers truths about his son's life - and death - in the country, truths that test loyalties forged in the war zones of Bosnia and Rwanda. A fiercely evocative narrative of modern-day India, filled with the clamour and hot stinks of its capital, this is a novel of death woven through with life.
